FAQ's
|
- How should my child prepare for the race?
- How do I register for the event?
Click here for the registration site.
- How much does it cost?
The cost is $25. However, as this is a USA Triathlon (“USAT”) certified race each participant must become a USAT member to participate. If you child is already a member, please bring his/her youth membership card to packet pick-up. If not a member, you will need to purchase an annual membership at packet pick-up for $5.00. Unfortunately, if your child is a member but you cannot find his/her membership card, you will be asked to purchase another annual membership.
- Once my child is registered, do we just show up to the race that day or do we need to do anything beforehand?
We prefer that you pick up the race "packet" the day before the race between 4:00 and 7:00 at Fleet Feet Sports located at 1204-A Reynolda Rd. in Winston-Salem. If you are travelling from out of town and arriving race morning, you will be able to pick up the race packet the morning of the race at Wake Forest. In the race "packet" will be directions to the race site, parking lot map, course maps, rules and more. Click here for a map to packet pick-up.
- What do I do when I get to the race site race morning?
After parking in the designated parking lot, bring all of your child’s gear to the transition area where you will get instructions on how to go set up his/her bike and other gear. Race volunteers will be available to guide you to the appropriate place and to answer your questions.
- What should my child wear to race?
We recommend a swim suit plus a shirt or race belt to which you will attach your child’s race number. Supportive sneakers are a must. Some racers prefer the comfort of wearing socks under sneakers while others want to save time in transition so skip socks. It is a trade-off between comfort and speed. Remember the goal is for the child to do the race under their own power with their own skill. They will only be empowered if they can do it themselves AND THEY WANT TO - EVEN if it takes a minute or two to put on the shoes, or shirt or belt. Volunteers are on hand to help children if they need it but we try to let the child do it as much as possible.
- Where do I buy a race belt and what is it?
We will have a limited amount of race belts for purchase at packet pick-up. A race belt is a simple way to wear the required race number without having to pin it to a shirt. It has a clip that snaps simply around the participant’s waist and makes it a breeze to move through transition. We encourage those interested to visit Fleet Feet Sports prior to packet pick-up to purchase race belts.
- What are the distances?
Ages 7-10: Swim 100 yards; Bike 3.1 miles; Run 0.6 miles
Ages 11-14: Swim 200 yards; Bike 6.2 miles; Run 1.2 miles
- How does the swim portion work?
The swim takes place in the indoor Wake Forest pool. The pool is 25 yards long. So, kids ages 7-10 complete 4 LENGTHS (or two laps) and those ages 11-14 complete 8 LENGTHS (or four laps). We group kids by age, two per lane and we split the lane down the middle instead of circle swim. Once the last finisher is done in each group, we line up and start the next group.
- How does the bike portion work?
The entire bike course is contained within the Wake Forest campus and consists of either two or four loops. Kids ages 7-10 do two loops while those ages 11-14 do four loops. The course will be open to traffic. However, police officers will be on the course to direct traffic away from participants and volunteers will be on course to make sure participants follow the course.
- How does the run portion work?
Again, the entire run portion takes place within the Wake Forest campus. The course is clearly marked and race volunteers will make sure participants stay on course. Police officers will be available to direct traffic away from participants as necessary. The run ends on the track adjacent to the transition area.
- How do I keep my other children entertained during and after the race?
The kid’s triathlon is run by parents just like you. Our goal is to create a positive and fun experience for the entire family. We have a “kids corner” set up adjacent to the finish line that has many kid friendly activities including: inflatable bounce slide, face painting, clown, free ice cream, and arts & crafts. We have two DJ’s who keep the atmosphere lively and fun and sometime we see spontaneous group dancing (think “Macarana”). We also have a ¼ mile “fun run” around the track for participant siblings. Runners finish under the same finish line as their older siblings and get the same finisher’s medal as big brother or big sister!
- Are there post-race refreshments for race participants?
Yes, we have an assortment of post race food and beverages for participants to enjoy.
- Awards – do you give out awards?
Yes, we want to recognize and reward the efforts of our participants so we give out awards to the first, second and third place finishers in the following categories for a total of 36 awards:
Overall Awards:
Girls ages: 7-10; 11-14 Boys ages: 7-10; 11-14
Age Groups Awards:
Girls ages: 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14 Boys ages: 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14

- Where should I stand to watch my child race?
When the race starts please stay seated in the bleachers to watch your child. Upon completion of the swim you will exit the pool following designated exits. Recommended spectator viewing positions will be designated on the course maps. At no time may you cross the course at random. It is a safety concern for people to cross the course at random or be on the race course at any time. Please help us put on a safe race.
- Why not volunteer?
If you would like to be closer to the race scene, why not help us out! We need many people to run this race smoothly. The more people involved the better. Please sign up for volunteering. E-mail:
